Calling all Journalists To...The Nate Berkus Show?

user-pic

The Appeal received an interesting invite via a press release from The Nate Berkus Show. As a matter of fact, the invitation is open to all journalists and editors. Here's what it reads:

"What is your community's claim to fame? Is there a person, a place or a thing that your paper has reported on that deserves a national spotlight? Is there an incredible child, an overcoming all odds story, an amazing entrepreneur, a talented or inspiring senior citizen, a unique or funny landmark, etc.? If you have reported on a human interest story that deserves a worldwide audience, the nationally syndicated daytime show, The Nate Berkus Show, would like to hear from you! "

If chosen, we'll be invited to fly to NYC and be featured on the segment "Claim to Fame". And they say journalists are under appreciated!

Berkus, whose previous claim to fame was working regularly with the queen bee of daytime television, Oprah Winfrey, is host of this pretty cheesy, sometimes awkward (see the video above to see what I mean) design talk show on NBC. It features subjects like design challenged husbands and the thriftiest person in America, so it makes total sense that they want us journalists to present our best human interest story, right? Oh and, here's the best part - it's an unpaid gig!

I confirmed with the PR rep handling this project, Krista Curry, that the producers areconsidering paying for the flight and accommodations of the lucky journalist and a guest (assuming they are part of the story), but not an appearance fee. I don't know why I'm so surprised, considering the amount of unpaid work squeezed out of journalists these days.*

It's actually genius of the show producers to make this into a contest, meaning they don't have to do the research - the stories will come to them.

Seriously though, for some reporters, this might be a good opportunity for some national exposure. The stories don't have to be design related, and the Curry says they haven't gotten much of a response yet (shocking!), so jump on it, folks!

E-mail your story to kristac@ferencomm.com.

*Here's where I should shamefully note that the Appeal doesn't pay everyone. For example, I don't get paid, nor do many of our hard working contributors. But then again, the Appeal's not a product of Sony Pictures Television Inc. and Harpo Productions, Inc. That doesn't excuse the Appeal, of course! But there you go. -- Eve Batey
