Case in Point

Case in Point

By Shamsul Islam Naz

On April 21, Sonia Naz was arrested on the orders of the Speaker of the National Assembly Chaudhry Amir Hussain for trespassing. After her release on bail, she blamed the local police for illegally detaining her husband Asim Yousaf, a clerk at the Excise and Taxation Department, and receiving a 1.4-million-rupee bribe from him. In response, the police investigation cell headed by SP Abdullah Khalid denied the accusation before his superiors as well as the Lahore High Court (LHC). In fact, the matter was hushed up until August, when Sonia addressed the print and electronic media and accused Inspector Jamshed Iqbal Chishti of raping her in the presence of several as yet unidentified policemen under SP Khalid’s orders.
