Geo News reporter Wali Khan Babar shot dead

Geo News reporter Wali Khan Babar shot dead

KARACHI: Wali Khan Babar, Geo News reporter has been shot dead in a terrorist attack in Liaquatabad, the television news channel reported Thursday.

Reports say that the reporter was on his way back home from Geo News office, when he was attacked by terrorists.

According to initial report, he was intercepted by unidentified saboteurs, who on recognizing him, opened gunshots at him point blank, leaving him dead on the spot. His body was recovered from a car.

Geo News said it was an incident of target killing, as Wali Khan received at least five bullets—two in forehead, one in jaw and two gunshots hit his neck. According to hospital sources, Wali Khan received at least five bullets.

It should be mentioned here that Wali Khan Babar was covering operation against drug-traffickers in Pehalwan Goth. He filed his report at Geo News office and was on way back home, when he was gunned down. Wali Khan had first joined Geo English in 2007 and later in 2008 he got associated with Geo News.

The funeral prayer of Shaheed reporter, Wali Khan Babar were offered here late Thursday night.
The deceased will be laid to rest in his native village in Zobe, family sources said.

3-day Mourning

Another report says; General Secretary of the Awami National Party (ANP) chapter Sindh Bashir Jan has been injured in a firing incident by unidentified miscreants near Hasan Square area of Karachi on Thursday.

Injured Bashir has been shifted to Jinnah Hospital.

Rabta Committee (Coordination Committee) of Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) expressed grief over the firing incident involving ANP leader.

Shahid Said, an ANP leader said the black flags would be flown in protest over two terror incidents involving killing of Geo News reporter Wali Khan Babar and terror attack at Bashir Jan in Karachi.

ANP also announced three-day mourning over the killing of Geo News reporter Wali Khan Babar and terror attack at Bashir Jan.

MQM Condems

Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) Chief Altaf Hussain has condemned the killing of reporter Wali Khan Babar, who was shot dead in a terrorist incident in Liaquatabad on Thursday.

MQM voiced concerns over two violent incidents involving killing of Geo News reporter Wali Khan Babar, who was shot dead in a terrorist incident in Liaquatabad and terror attack on General Secretary of the Awami National Party (ANP) chapter Sindh Bashir Jan.

Wali Khan Babar’s body has been shifted to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital. While, Bashir Jan has been rushed to Jinnah Hospital.

PFUJ Condemns

The Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ) has also condemned the killing of Geo News Reporter Wali Khan Babar in a terrorist attack and decided to observe country-wide black day today, Friday throughout the country, staging protest relies and hoisting black flags on Unions of Journalists offices, media centers, press clubs to expresses their resentment and to mourn the death of the deceased.

Wali Khan Babar leaves behind a widow mother, three sisters and four brothers to mourn. He was in profession for the last 4 years and resident of north Nazim Abad, Karachi.

According to reports reaching PFUJ Secretariat, here on Thursday night, Wali Khan Babar was on his way back home from Geo News office, when he was attacked by terrorists.

Condemning this incident in strong terms the PFUJ said this incident has once again proved that working conditions in Pakistan for media practitioners are neither conducive nor safe and the killing of media persons has become order of the day.

The PFUJ said in the year 2010 as many as 21 media related employees were killed in Pakistan in various incidents including target killing, bomb blasts and suicide attacks while in the last 13 days of the first month of the year 2011 two media persons have so far been killed.

Malik orders Inquiry

Meanwhile, Federal Interior Minister Rehman A Malik directed IG Sindh to submit a report on killing of Geo News reporter Wali Khan Babar, who was shot dead in a terrorist incident in Liaquatabad here on Thursday.
