PFUJ asks mediamen to observe Wednesday as Black Day

ISLAMABAD, Oct 12: The Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ) has asked all affiliated media bodies to observe Oct 13 (Wednesday) as a black day across the country against mass retrenchments in various media houses.

In a directive issued to all the affaliated media orgnaiations throughout the country, the PFUJ pointed out that retrenchments have been made in almost all media houses, including GEO, Aaj, Business Plus, Rohi, Punjab TV, Waqat News, News-one, Royal TV etc and hundreds of media persons have been sacked on the false pretext of "financial loss."

The PFUJ further said that the media persons and their organisations cannot sit silent on such uncalled for and arbitrary acts whereby a large number of working journalists and media related employees have been thrown out of job without any notices.

Such acts remind us of the summary court decisions during martial law, but it is a pity that in a democratic set up media house are still employing "Martil Law type precedent of summary trials.

The massive retrenchments without any prior notice are nothing but a cruel act which needs to be condemned before all forums, adding that all media organisations would display unity and stage country-wide protests against such unlawful step of the media houses.

The PFUJ also asked the affiliated bodies to stage demonstrations, hold protest meetings, wear black arm bands and hoist black flags on press clubs and their respective offices.
