Journalists' wage board to submit report by December 31

Wage Board will not seek more time to finalise report: Kharge

The wage boards for working journalists and other newspaper employees, set up by the government under the Chairmanship of Justice Gurbax Rai Majithia, will submit a report by December 31, well before completion of its term that day.

Union Minister for Labour and Employment Mallikarjun Kharge told The Hinduafter the wage board chairman and other members of the board called on him here on Wednesday that the delegation members assured him that they would not seek more time to finalise the report. “We will complete our task before the deadline,” Mr. Kharge said quoting Justice Majithia. The wage board members are likely to call on Prime Minister Manmohan Singh soon.

Official sources said the board had completed personal hearings of the employees' and employers' representatives and was now on the job of drafting the final report. The wage board for working journalists was set up by the Labour Ministry through a notification on May 24, 2007. The one for other news paper employees was set up on July 3, 2007.

Originally Justice K. Narayana Kurup was heading the wage boards and after his resignation in 2008, Justice Majithia was appointed chairman on February 28, 2009. The term of the boards expired on May 23, 2010 and later extended till the end of this year.

Meanwhile, Mr. Kharge hoped that corporates, which have set up their own Provident Fund Trusts for their employees, would also pay interest at the rate of 9.5 per cent for 2010-11 for their employees on the lines of the Employees Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO). They were expected to strictly follow the EPFO rules in managing the PF funds, he said.

There are over 3,000 recognised PF trusts and they have a fund of Rs.2 lakh crore.
